Weekly thoughts and insights from participants of the Heart Matters: Cultivating Loving Kindness: This week’s contribution is by Evangelos Diavolitsis: On Thursday January 21st Dharma Hub teacher, Maya Lewandowsky taught a class on Loving Kindness. The first question she asked us is; what does it mean to be human? This simple and profound question inspired deep insights for me. The audience responses were diverse and oppositional. I realized that the human experience is vast, infinite and unpredictable. There was a strong insight of “we are actually all in this together”. We are not as separate as we think. You could define an insight as an understanding you did not have before. Another insight that arose is that regardless of what is happening in my complex world, the “seed” of Loving Kindness is always within me. It is a decision to lead with that seed and to help it grow and flourish. Life is not always loving and kind so how will this “I” choose to react/respond to unpredictable phenomena becomes a deciding factor in what state this mind/body will be in. Loving Kindness is not automatic. We train ourselves to be loving and kind by unraveling and untying the inner knots through Loving Kindness meditation. We can self generate Loving Kindness starting with the heart center in the body. I also learned that when I am tired, support from a group of experienced practitioners is vital for moving me through negative emotions. Thanks for being an effortless embodiment of loving kindness Maya! May our efforts benefit all beings everywhere!
